Abstract

Due to rising oil prices and environmental concerns, the development of electric and hybrid vehicles has gained popularity., The goal of this work is to study solar-powered electric vehicle with an electric motor integrated with a supercapacitor (SC) to capture regenerative braking energy and decrease the maximum current consumption in the battery management system. A boost DC-DC converter raises the voltage level with the solar panel to higher voltage with a bidirectional DC-DC converter is connected in a series or parallel configuration with the photovoltaic module to operate in both directions while the solar energy is used to power the vehicle. An inverter is used to regulate the BLDC motor, which is the main source of power for the propulsion system and a SC is employed to decrease battery stress and maintain constant DC bus voltage. The kinetic energy that is captured by regenerative braking system can be transformed into electric energy that can be immediately stored in the SC.
