Abstract

Wire arc additive manufacturing is an emerging technology in advance fabrication. It has become a very promising alternative to high value large metal components in many manufacturing industries. Even though it has high deposition rate and high metal utilization rates, coarse grains and anisotropy are the major drawbacks of this process. In this work, a study was done to investigate how to overcome these challenges. In this study, during the deposition of SS308L, Al2O3 particles are added in the middle of deposition. Analysis of the microstructure, hardness and related radiography tests are performed on the WAAM in-situ specimens and WAAMed specimens. An improvement in the grain size and hardness was observed with in the in-situ specimens when compared with WAAMed specimens.
