Influence of Split Angle on Split Washer Performance: Numerical Analysis
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study focuses on the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to evaluate the performance of various split angles of split washers regarding load-deflection characteristics. FEA of the split washers under compressive loading and unloading is performed using the structural module of ANSYS software. The sample sizes selected for this study are M10 and M12 split lock washers. The variation in load-deflection characteristics is studied for 5°, 10°, 15° and 20° split angles. The washer is modeled between two rigid plates, and under controlled displacement of the upper plate the reaction loads are obtained at the point of contact of the washer with the lower plate. The findings indicate that numerical analysis can predict the behavior of split washers based on split angle and deformation, helping optimize the design for specific applications with weight reduction. The load-deflection characteristics curves obtained using FEA are similar to the actual curves of split washers. The reaction load at an elastic point and peak point are slightly decreased for lesser angles and more loss in reaction load is observed at higher split angles.
