Abstract

Mechanical and tribological properties are critical factors in the performance and durability of materials used in various applications. This work focuses on aluminium 2000 series metal matrix composites (MMCs) and their mechanical and tribological characteristics. Aluminium 2000 series MMCs are known for their enhanced mechanical properties, including improved strength, stiffness and wear resistance, compared to the base aluminium alloy. Incorporating reinforcement materials such as silicon carbide (SiC), alumina (Al2O3), or carbon fibres allows tailored properties to meet specific application requirements. These composites exhibit higher tensile strength and hardness, making them attractive for demanding industries such as aerospace and automotive. Furthermore, cost considerations must be evaluated based on the specific application and performance requirements. Despite these challenges, aluminium 2000 series MMCs hold significant potential for delivering high-performance solutions in various sectors where mechanical and tribological properties are paramount.
