Energy Efficient Manufacturing of Piston Head by Sheet Metal Forming Process: A Future Perspective
Main Article Content
Abstract
Lightweight pistons are designed to reduce engine weight, minimize friction losses, enhance fuel efficiency and improve overall engine performance. It can be achieved by optimizing material selection, design and utilization of proper manufacturing processes. The present study described the need for an appropriate manufacturing process for lightweight and energy-efficient methods. The energy consumption in each step of piston manufacturing using the sheet metal forming process has been calculated and compared with that of conventional manufacturing processes. It was found that the manufacturing of pistons from sheet metal is more worthwhile than conventional ones. A sheet metal piston can save up to 52 ml per hour of fuel. It has been found that saving fuel can reduce 439.48 kg of CO2 in greenhouse gases per year.
