Synthesis, Characterization and Coating Studies of Poly (5-Indanyl Methacrylate) - Methyl methacrylate Polymer on Pulsed Fiber Laser Arc Welded 316L Steel
Main Article Content
Abstract
People are interested in polymers owing to their use in numerous engineering fields. Likely, low-cost metals also cause corrosion and affect numerous engineering fields. It connected polymer synthesis to minimize corrosion on cheap mild steel. This study examined mild steel coatings made from copolymer of 5-indanyl methacrylate and methyl methacrylate using 2, 3 dihydro-5-indanol. It was characterized using FT-IR and NMR spectrum techniques. The alkyl group (2950/cm), =C-H (3040/cm), -C=C-, Ar (1485/cm) and C=O (1740/cm) peaks are noticeable. Both NMR signals exposed the structure and absence of olefinic bond. Ester carbonyl carbon was found at 165.82 ppm. Prepared polymer was applied to control the corrosion on pulsed fiber laser arc welded 316L steel. The weight loss technique was carried for the sample in 1M salt solution and observed the loss between 0.032 and 0.123g. highest corroded sample carried for electrochemical study in 3.5% NaCl along with the prepared copolymer. Impedance study showed that polymer with ester and indanyl controlled the corrosion on welded sample. The outcome revealed the lower corrosion rate of 6.35mpy when compared to uncoated corrosion rate 180.2 mpy.
