Enhancing Automotive Vehicle Crashworthiness with Trefoil-Shaped Thin-Walled Structures in the Chassis

Abstract
This study examines the crashworthiness of a newly developed tree-foiled structure without the use of foam filling. Both numerical simulations, conducted using ANSYS 2019R, and experimental tests on a UTM machine were carried out to assess performance. The investigation focuses on how different wall geometries affect the behaviour of the tube under axial impact, analysing six distinct shapes. These configurations are evaluated using standard crashworthiness criteria to determine the most effective design in terms of reducing peak force and maximizing energy absorption. Emphasis is placed on the performance of the hollow clover-shaped tubes, highlighting their response without internal foam support. Key parameters such as maximum impact force, specific energy absorption and structural weight during frontal collisions are thoroughly analysed. The ultimate goal is to identify the optimal configuration that can enhance passenger safety in automotive applications.
