Abstract

In this investigation, the effects of fuel injection pressure and fuel injection timing on the performance and emission characteristics of LHR diesel engine fuelled with tobacco seed and cotton seed oil methyl ester blend were investigated at different loads (from 0 to 7 kg incremented by 20%). Experiments were designed using Taguchi with L18 orthogonal array (OA) and the load, fuel injection pressure and fuel injection timing with multiple levels of each were taken as control parameters. In addition, optimisation has been performed to obtain the best combination of control parameters to optimise the response characteristics such as brake power (BP), specific fuel consumption (SFC), brake thermal efficiency (BTE), ME (ME), carbon monoxide (CO) emission, hydrocarbons (HC) emission, nitrogen oxides (NOx) emission and smoke opacity (SOP). Optimisation analysis revealed that FIP of 230 bar, FIT of 29° bTDC and a load of 4.2 kg were the optimum results for the best performance and emission values. The optimum responses according to the optimum parameters determined as 3.07kW, 0.27 kg/kWh, 29.44%, 74.54%, 0.019%, 27.19 ppm, 515.91 ppm and 25.99 HSU for BP, SFC, BTE, ME, emissions of CO, HC, NOx and SOP, respectively. The average error of 8.16% obtained from the validation between the results from optimisation and experiments confirm that the current findings are acceptable.
