Abstract

Hydrogen is an abundant element in the universe and it is a promising fuel to be implemented in internal combustion engines for reducing emissions, as well as improving the performance of the engine. The major properties that promote hydrogen as a fuel are clean burning, high energy density, high flame speed and low quenching distance. A complete overview of hydrogen induction in compression ignition (CI) engine is discussed in this review paper. Hydrogen induction along with diesel is done by dual fuel technology, this method improves fuel efficiency, reduces emissions and increases the power output of the engine. Brake-specific energy consumption of the engine reduces as hydrogen is inducted; this reduces diesel fuel consumption. Various aspects and research work up to date in the field of application of hydrogen as fuel is discussed in detail. This paper also states the advantages and disadvantages of implementing hydrogen in engines.
