Abstract

Non-edible vegetable oils are promising source for replacing diesel fuels partly. Rubber seed oil (RSO) is one such oil available in plenty. However, RSO cannot be directly injected into engine cylinder due to its higher viscosity and lower volatility. Hence, RSO has to be converted into methyl esters to improve its physical and chemical properties. The present investigation aims at transesterification of RSO and to use as blending fuel with cetane enhancer 2-ethylhexyl nitrate (EHN) as additive up to 10% by volume. Two blends are prepared on volume basis namely RSO90 + CE10 and RSO95 + CE5. Improved emissions are observed for blends when compared with RSO100. Marginal increase in HC and CO2 were observed for blended fuels. However, decrease in smoke and NOX emissions were observe for blended fuels. Brake thermal efficiency of RSO90 was slightly increase when compared to other fuels. These may be attributed to shorter combustion duration and ignition delay. On overall basis, RSO90 + CE10 as used as diesel fuel substitute.
