Abstract

The necessity of fossil fuels in daily life and the crisis of fuels has led to a move towards pollution-free, renewable and biodegradable fuels. Biodiesels are obtained from triglycerides of vegetables through a transesterification reaction. The biodiesel from linseed and karanja vegetable oils is used in this experimental study. An experiment has been carried out to inspect the variation of different performance values of the engine when fuelled with the various blends of linseed and karanja biodiesel. The share of the blends was investigated from 10-40% with pure diesel. In the results, different terms such as mechanical efficiency, thermal efficiency, brake thermal efficiency, indicated power and brake-specific fuel consumption, are discussed and a comparison is made. As a result, it has been observed that linseed biodiesel has 3% higher mechanical efficiency, produces 6% more indicated power and has 15% more BSFC than karanja biodiesel and pure diesel. The overall study shows that linseed biodiesel has a high potential to be used to replace pure diesel in the engine.
