Abstract

In the current work, Al-based hybrid composite has been developed after the addition of SiC and Gr particles by the stir casting route. The developed composite consists of hard reinforcement. Thus, it became difficult to machine them using conventional machining processes. Thus, the developed composite is processed on the electric discharge machining (EDM) process. The EDM process is associated with a number of process parameters. It became essential to do the performance analysis of the input parameter and investigate the significant process parameters. The planning of experiments was completed using a Taguchi-based L18 mixed orthogonal array. The input machining variables analysed in the current research were tool materials (brass and copper), pulse on-time, pulse off-time and voltage. The material removal rate (MRR) was investigated corresponding to each parametric setting. All the analysis was completed at 95% confidence interval for the confirmation experiments and population. The optimized setting suggested by the proposed approach tool material is copper; pulse on-time is 90 µs and pulse off-time is 30 µs. Pon has the maximum percentage influence of 56.32% on MRR, followed by Poff (20.43%) and Tool (20.36%).
