Investigation of machining of SS316LN under Abrasive Water Jet Machining and Plasma Machining
Main Article Content
Abstract
Abrasive water jet cutting (AWJC) and plasma arc cutting (PAC) are two widely used cutting methods in various industries. However, the selection of a suitable cutting method for a specific material is critical to obtain high-quality cuts. In this study, the performance of AWJC and PAC methods were compared for cutting the material SS316LN. This paper aims to provide a comparative analysis of AWJC and PAC techniques for SS136LN. This study considers factors such as power consumption, surface finish and cost. The experiments were conducted under different cutting parameters, including cutting speed, standoff distance, abrasive flow rate for AWJC and plasma gas flow rate and plasma current for PAC. The results showed that both cutting methods could produce high-quality cuts on SS316LN. However, AWJC demonstrated a greater performance in terms of cutting accuracy, surface roughness and heat-affected zone (HAZ) compared to PAC. The heat-affected zones (HAZ) were narrower in AWJC, the surface finish was better and the surface roughness was lower. Furthermore, the taper angle was lower in AWJC. The findings of this study can be useful for selecting a suitable cutting method for SS316LN and similar materials in various applications.
