Abstract

A leaf spring is an important component of vehicles in terms of human comfort and safety as part of the suspension system. Because of the importance of suspension system in the utility and safety of a vehicle, it is important to develop a failure-free suspension design and assembly unit. Design Failure Mode Effective Analysis (DFMEA) techniques were utilised in this research to adopt preventive measures to reduce failure rates. It starts with deciding, categorising and researching every individual probable failure and grading it using numerical ratings. The four numerical grades are Severity, Occurrence, Detection and RPN (Risk Priority Number). These numerical ratings are used to identify the most likely failure of leaf springs. To overcome these failures, it is also necessary to analyse and assess the essential features of fatigue failure mode and fatigue life using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) techniques. Finally, methods are presented and advised to improve the performance and longevity of the leaf spring.
