Effect of Scandium Interlayer Friction Stir Welding on the Aluminium Alloys
Main Article Content
Abstract
The impact of the Al-4.5Mg-0.3Sc alloy addition to the weld nugget of friction stir weldments was investigated in this article. During the FSW process, scandium is injected into the weld nugget zone as an interlayer in between the base metal sheets. Friction stir welding with and without a scandium interlayer was used to evaluate the effect of scandium additions to the weldments. The microstructural alterations on the weld generated by scandium deposition are investigated using a SEM micrograph on both welded samples. Tensile tests were done on both welded samples and it was discovered that adding scandium improves the weldments tensile properties. Fractographic tests demonstrated that the inclusion of scandium reduced the ductility of the specimens. According to the hardness study, the inclusion of the scandium interlayer increases the hardness values of the weldments.
